UPSC Prelims Cut Off 2026: Understanding the Trends

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Preliminary Examination annually to filter candidates for the Mains stage. For the 2026 cycle, the examination is scheduled for 24 May 2026. Aspirants often look for the cut-off to understand the competition level and set a realistic target score for their preparation.

What Determines the UPSC Prelims Cut Off?

The cut-off is not a fixed number; it is dynamic and influenced by several critical factors:

  • Number of Vacancies: Higher vacancy counts can sometimes result in lower cut-offs.
  • Difficulty Level of GS Paper-I: This is the primary driver. A challenging paper naturally lowers the qualifying threshold.
  • Candidate Performance: The overall standard of preparation across the candidate pool significantly impacts the outcome.
  • Reservation Policies: Category-specific data reveals how different segments are evaluated.

Previous Year Cut-Off Analysis (2021-2025)

Analyzing historical data is a vital part of a smart preparation strategy. It helps candidates identify 'safe' zones for mock tests.

UPSC Marking Scheme

The Preliminary examination comprises two papers. It is crucial to remember that only General Studies Paper-I is used to calculate the merit list. CSAT (GS Paper-II) is purely a qualifying paper requiring a minimum of 33% marks. Candidates must also be aware of the negative marking policy, where 1/3rd of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for every incorrect response.

How to Access Official UPSC Cut-Offs
